Notable incidents
Hand-researched and checked against multiple independent sources before publishing — not an automated feed, and deliberately not exhaustive. Listed here because they were large and well-documented enough to matter for understanding KuCoin's risk profile, not because we're implying anything about brands without an entry here.

Hot-wallet hack — ~$280M stolen, 84% later recovered
Attackers obtained the private keys to several of KuCoin's hot wallets and withdrew roughly $280 million across a range of tokens. Within about seven weeks KuCoin said it had recovered 84% of the stolen funds (~$235 million) through on-chain tracking, exchange freezes, and token-contract upgrades, and covered the remainder through its own insurance fund so that no user lost money.

Audits & reserves
Hand-researched and checked against the exchange's own current disclosures — "audit" gets used loosely in crypto, so each entry states plainly whether it's a full independent financial audit, a narrower proof-of-reserves attestation by a named third party, or a figure KuCoin publishes itself with no independent check. Absence of an entry here is not a claim either way.

Hacken — Monthly, recurring — 44+ consecutive months
KuCoin publishes a monthly, Merkle-tree-based proof-of-reserves report, with independent verification by Hacken -- 44 consecutive months of publication as of its most recent report, including 14 separate independent Hacken audits, and reserve ratios consistently reported above 100%. This is the same tier as Kraken's and OKX's programmes: a genuine, recurring, independently-attested reserves check, not a full financial audit. KuCoin was also one of the exchanges whose original 2022 proof-of-reserves attestation was performed by Mazars, before Mazars withdrew from all crypto proof-of-reserves work that December.

Is KuCoin the best crypto exchange for you?
There's no such thing as the best crypto exchange in absolute terms — only the best fit for a given person's situation. The right choice for a business that needs a clean, auditable compliance trail is rarely the right choice for an individual just holding a small amount long-term, and both are different again from someone trading derivatives professionally. We don't recommend KuCoin, or anyone else — we give you what's independently verifiable so you can make that call yourself.
Here's what we've actually verified about KuCoin, specifically:
- Holds a genuine crypto-specific licence in the EU/EEA (MiCA), plus AML-only registration in AU.
- Tracked across 30 jurisdictions through 2 legal entities, appearing in our register since 2025-11-27.
- Has a current independent audit or active proof-of-reserves attestation on file — see Audits & reserves below.
- 1 publicly documented incident on file, most recently "Hot-wallet hack — ~$280M stolen, 84% later recovered" (2020-09-26) — see Notable incidents below for what happened and how it was handled.
None of this tells you whether KuCoin is right for you — that depends on what you're trying to do, which jurisdiction you're in, your own risk tolerance, and practical details this register doesn't track (fees, product range, day-to-day UX). What it does give you is what's actually checkable, so you're deciding from facts rather than the exchange's own marketing.
